How to look younger in photos: 8 tips that actually work

Published · AgeDart

The same face can look five or ten years older or younger depending on the photo. Most of that difference has nothing to do with creams: it's light, angle and a few habits you can change in seconds.

Same person, same age, three photos. Which one would you say is youngest? (AI-generated faces)

1. Face the light, don't stand under it

Light from above (ceiling lamps, midday sun) carves every line and puts shadows under the eyes. Turn towards a window or go outside on a cloudy day: soft light from the front fills in shadows and is the single biggest change you can make.

2. Camera at eye level or a little above

Shooting from below adds a double chin and makes the face look heavier. Hold the phone at eye level or slightly higher, and tilt your chin a touch forward and down to define the jawline.

3. Step back and zoom in

A phone held very close distorts the face: the nose looks bigger and the face rounder. Hold it at arm's length, or prop it up a bit further away and use 2× zoom. Faces look more natural — and usually younger.

4. Rested eyes

Tiredness shows first in the eyes. If you can, take the photo after a good night's sleep, in the morning, after drinking water. Cold water or a cold spoon on the eyelids for a minute reduces puffiness.

5. A real smile

A relaxed, genuine smile reads younger than a serious face. A forced one does the opposite: it tightens the skin around the eyes. Think of something funny, or take a burst of photos while talking.

6. Beard and hair on purpose

A full beard tends to add years; a trimmed one or a clean shave usually takes them away. A fresh haircut matters too. If your hair is greying, good front light makes it look silver instead of dull.

7. Colour near your face

Clear, solid colours near the face reflect light onto the skin. Very dark or very busy tops can make the face look tired by contrast.

8. Skip the beauty filter

Smoothing filters look fake at a glance and people mentally add years back. A natural photo with good light beats a filtered one.

Test it

The only honest way to know which photo makes you look younger is to ask people who don't know you. On AgeDart you post a selfie and strangers around the world guess your age; change the photo and see how the number moves.
